SYNOPSIS
Norilsk, Russia’s northernmost city, is also its coldest and most polluted. The city is slowly breaking apart as the permafrost beneath is melted by the very gases it expels into the atmosphere. Every winter Norilsk descends into permanent darkness, contributing to the “polar night syndrome”, often leading to chronic depression. “Until the Thunder Crashes” follows Nina and Artyom, two Norilsk residents, as they both come to terms with the harsh conditions of their environment, their individual struggles and hopes of escape. Norilsk is a place where the melioristic dreams of the early postwar period have fallen in on themselves to create a world where darkness and light trade places.
